There was a time when I thought growing closer to God meant doing more—reading more Scripture, attending every church service, checking all the “spiritual” boxes.
But I’ve come to learn that God isn’t looking for a performance. He’s looking for presence. And He meets us in the small, quiet spaces more than we realize.
These five simple habits aren’t revolutionary. They don’t take hours or fancy routines. But over time, they’ve drawn my heart closer to His in ways I didn’t expect.
If you’ve been feeling distant from God lately, or just longing for a deeper connection, maybe one of these will meet you right where you are.

Whispering His Name First Thing in the Morning
Before the coffee. Before the news. Before the texts and to-dos…
I just whisper: “Good morning, Lord.”
It may seem small, but that one sentence shifts my soul. It reminds me who’s in control of my day. Even before I’ve done anything, I’ve already invited Him into it. No matter what the day brings, I’ve started with the One who goes before me.
“In the morning, Lord, You hear my voice…” —Psalm 5:3

Listening to Worship While I Clean
It’s funny how God can meet you in the middle of a messy kitchen.
I used to feel like I had to set aside “quiet time” to connect with Him—but now I know He can show up while I fold laundry or wash dishes. When I turn on worship music while I clean, something shifts. The atmosphere changes. My heart softens.
The housework becomes holy work, and the ordinary moments turn sacred.
He’s in the background music of my life—always there, always present.

Reading One Verse Slowly Instead of a Whole Chapter
I used to pressure myself to read entire chapters of the Bible every day. But honestly? I’d forget most of it by lunch.
Now, I focus on just one verse—and I let it breathe.
I write it on a sticky note, speak it out loud, or carry it in my pocket. Sometimes that one verse hits me deeper than any sermon ever could. It follows me throughout the day, whispering truth when I start to forget.
Slow is okay. In fact, sometimes slow is exactly what our soul needs.

Talking to God Like a Friend
This one changed everything for me.
I used to think I had to sound “right” in prayer—say all the proper words, use the right tone. But then I realized… God’s not grading my grammar. He just wants to hear from me.
So now, I talk to Him like I would talk to someone I trust:
“Lord, I’m tired today.”
“God, that conversation was hard.”
“Thank You for helping me through that moment.”
It’s not formal. It’s real. And in that realness, I’ve felt closer to Him than ever before.

Ending the Day with Simple Gratitude
Some days end with joy. Some end with frustration. And some… just feel heavy.
But no matter what, I try to end my day with this:
“Thank You, God. You were with me today.”
Even if I didn’t get everything right. Even if I struggled. He was faithful. He showed up.
Some nights I name one thing I’m grateful for. Other nights I just whisper thanks with tired eyes and a full heart. But every time—it brings peace. It reminds me that I’m held.
💛 Why These Simple Habits Matter
If you’re anything like me, you’ve had seasons where God felt far away. You showed up to church, maybe said a prayer or two—but inside, you felt disconnected. Dry. Maybe even distant.
I’ve been there.
But friend, here’s the truth I’ve come to believe with all my heart: God isn’t waiting for you to get it all together before you come close.
He’s not asking for perfection. He’s simply inviting you to be present.
These little habits aren’t magic. They don’t earn you more of God’s love—you already have all of it. But what they do is open your eyes and heart to the truth that’s been there all along:
He’s near. He’s listening. And He wants to walk with you.
You don’t need a big moment to return to Him.
You just need a quiet yes.
A whispered prayer.
A tiny act of trust.
And when you do that—even in the smallest ways—you’ll find Him right there. Closer than your next breath
