What Does the Bible Say About Caring for Your Body?

The Bible reminds us that our bodies are gifts from God, and we are called to take care of them.

From eating well to getting enough rest, Scripture offers guidance on how we should honor God by maintaining our health.

Your Body as a Temple of the Holy Spirit

The Bible makes it clear that our bodies are not just our own, they belong to God.

1 Corinthians 6:19-20 says:

“Do you not know that your bodies are temples of the Holy Spirit, who is in you, whom you have received from God? You are not your own; you were bought at a price. Therefore honor God with your bodies.”

This verse reminds us that taking care of our bodies isn’t just about looking good or feeling better, it’s about honoring God.

Just as we would care for a church building, we should also care for the bodies God has given us.

Healthy Living as a Form of Worship

Many people think of worship as singing hymns or praying, but did you know that taking care of your health is also a form of worship?

Romans 12:1 tells us:

“Therefore, I urge you, brothers and sisters, in view of God’s mercy, to offer your bodies as a living sacrifice, holy and pleasing to God, this is your true and proper worship.”

When we eat nourishing foods, exercise, and rest, we are offering our bodies to God in a way that pleases Him. A healthy body allows us to serve God with energy and strength.

Avoiding Harmful Habits

The Bible warns against habits that harm our bodies.

Proverbs 23:20-21 says:

“Do not join those who drink too much wine or gorge themselves on meat, for drunkards and gluttons become poor, and drowsiness clothes them in rags.”

While the Bible doesn’t say we must avoid certain foods completely, it does encourage balance and self-control.

Galatians 5:22-23 lists self-control as one of the fruits of the Spirit.

Whether it’s overeating, smoking, or anything else that damages our health, we should strive to avoid excess and honor God with our choices.

Rest and Renewal

In our busy world, it’s easy to neglect rest, but God designed us to need it.

He even commanded rest in Exodus 20:8-10 when He gave the Sabbath:

“Remember the Sabbath day by keeping it holy. Six days you shall labor and do all your work, but the seventh day is a Sabbath to the Lord your God.”

Even Jesus took time to step away from the crowds and rest (Mark 6:31).

Rest isn’t laziness, it’s a way to restore our bodies and minds so we can continue serving God.

Strengthening the Body for Service

Caring for our bodies isn’t just for our own benefit, it helps us serve others.

Isaiah 40:29-31 says:

“He gives strength to the weary and increases the power of the weak… But those who hope in the Lord will renew their strength; they will soar on wings like eagles; they will run and not grow weary, they will walk and not be faint.”

When we take care of our health, we have the energy to fulfill God’s calling in our lives.

Whether it’s helping a neighbor, playing with grandkids, or volunteering in church, a strong body allows us to do more for God’s kingdom.

Caring for our bodies is more than just a good habit, it’s a spiritual responsibility.

The Bible teaches us that our bodies belong to God, and we should treat them with respect.
